SNOQUALMIE/NORTH BEND, Wa -- Many areas across the Puget Sound region are still digging out from Mother Nature's massive snow hit. A group of dedicated King County Search and Rescue volunteers went all over the county to help stranded first responders so they could respond to emergencies in the storm. For a grueling week, volunteer rescuers like Heather Jordan put their lives on hold to help those who also save lives.

Living on an island, we all know we are sitting ducks if bad weather is headed our way. We can evacuate to a shelter or another spot on the island, or take off to a neighbor island, but if a hurricane is coming, it most likely will affect the entire Hawaiian chain. So unless we’re willing to get on a plane and head to the mainland, we’re pretty much stuck right where we live.

On top of mudslides, breached levees, flooding and traffic messes, this week’s storm — the strongest of the season — has also interrupted hundreds of flights at the Bay Area’s airports. By 8:30 p.m. Friday, San Francisco International Airport reported 475 delays and 25 cancellations, airport duty manager Maria Buyco said. The airport also enacted a ground delay program, where incoming flights are held at their departure airports, at 1:30 p.m. Friday that would impact afternoon and evening flights. Morgan said the ground delay was prompted by the weather. The average delays on Friday were about 90 minutes, Buyco said. On Thursday, the airport saw 490 delays, ranging between one minute and two hours, and 123 cancellations.

Friends, family and neighbors in Lake Elsinore were pitching in on Friday to help clean up mud and debris left behind from the previous day's heavy rains.

Several schools across the region closed Thursday because of relentless rain and flooding that caused power outages and made roads inaccessible. In Marin County, at least 10 schools were shuttered: Bolinas Stinson School, San Domenico School, Nicasio School, Manor Elementary School, Tamalpais High School and all schools in the Shoreline Unified School District.

OSHKOSH (WLUK) -- Residents in Oshkosh are guaranteed to find a place that sells warm, hand-made pizzas, during a winter storm. "We do it because we know there’s a lot of people out there that depend on places like us," said Josh Demel, owner of Zeronis Pizza. Demel keeps his pizza restaurant open during bad winter conditions. "Yeah, it's mainly a little busier, but mainly because everyone else is closed, not any other reason," said Demel.

Lake Tahoe is in store for another day of snow and strong winds as a winter storm continues to move across the region. NASHVILLE, Tenn. --A Winter Weather Advisory has been extended to include locations around Clarksville, Dover, and Erin Tennessee. A wintry mix will be possible for those areas as well as Robertson and Sumner counties as early as 8 p. m. Friday. Trigg, Christian and Todd counties in southern Kentucky were upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning Friday night until 3 a. m. Saturday. Light ice accumulation is possible but could create slick conditions.

The strongest storm of the year continued to wreak havoc on the Bay Area early Friday morning with traffic backed up due to flooding and sinkholes, officials said. All westbound lanes on Highway 37 in Novato were closed at about 4 a.m. due to flooding, according to the city’s Police Department. The closure occurred from Atherton Avenue to the Highway 101 interchange, police said. The lanes were expected to remain closed for the rest of the day. In Redwood City, one lane on El Camino Real, just north of Whipple Avenue, was shut down due to a sinkhole, according to authorities. Elsewhere in the Bay Area, a severe traffic alert remained in place for Highway 35 between Page Mill Road and Highway 9 in Santa Clara County due to a sinkhole.

A roar jolted Kevin Austin awake in the middle of the night, like a train passing his bedroom. But there weren’t any tracks near his Sausalito home. A massive mudslide had just given way in the 33-year-old’s neighborhood, as the loose soil under his next-door neighbor’s home sent it rushing toward another house. The predawn landslide Thursday occurred in the midst of a torrential storm — the largest to hit the Bay Area this year. “I just thought to get out,” Austin said, as he and a few others took shelter Thursday at an evacuation center at Sausalito City Hall. “It kept getting louder.” A woman was trapped inside the home as it slid into a neighboring house. It didn’t take long for crews to rescue her.

BROWN COUNTY (WLUK) -- While roads were snow covered like you'd normally see during a snow event that closes schools and businesses, Winter Storm Beth brought much more wind than usual. “I don't think the snow is really the factor as much as the wind and the temperature making the snow blow around as much as it does,” said Henry Clay of Manitowoc. Like most municipalities, Brown County asked drivers to stay home if possible.

With extreme temperatures forecast through Friday, the City of River Falls has decided to open the Hoffman Park Storm Shelter (near the baseball stadium in Hoffman Park), for 24/7 usage beginning today (Tuesday) at 3 p.m. and continuing through noon on Friday.A couple dozen chairs and several tables...

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The first break came with the massive blizzard that wreaked havoc on the East Coast, essentially locking television viewers in their homes. The Daytona 500, meanwhile, was to be broadcast live in its entirety for the first time, reaching markets that knew little, if anything, about stock car racing. The 3 1/2-hour event finished in stunning fashion, another fortunate turn that featured a muddy, bloody brawl a few hundred yards from the finish line. It was NASCAR's version of a perfect storm. And it changed the sport forever.

City of Redding and Shasta County residents clearing their own property can self-haul storm debris to the City of Redding Transfer Station and the Richard W. Curry West Central Landfill free of charge through March 2, 2019, during normal operating hours. After March 2, storm debris will still be accepted at both locations at normal disposal rates. The Transfer Station operating hours are Monday through Saturday from 8 a. m. to 4:30 p. m.

A massive winter storm could dump as much as 3 feet of snow at lake level this weekend. Higher elevations are potentially in store for up to 6 feet. A winter storm warning remains in effect at Lake Tahoe until noon Sunday. According to the National Weather Service in Reno, an additional 1-3 feet of…

January 29, 2014 is one of those stories that really must be watched to be appreciated. For many, the Southern Ice Storm of 2014 was the first time some Gulf Coast residents had ever faced driving on street frozen solid. Let's just say it was a very good day for auto repair shops. But a bad day for motorist in Birmingham, stuck in their cars, some overnight when wet snow and freezing temps turned Alabama into a skating rink from head to tow.
